How do I install my festoon lights?

Step 1: Gather Your Gear

All good things come with a bit of prep work. You'll need your festoon lights, some hooks or clips to hang the lights, and a mate or two for emotional support. And - depending on how tall you are - maybe a ladder.

Step 2: Plan Your Layout

Take a squiz at your space and figure out where you want to hang your lights. Whether you're stringing them up along the fence, weaving them through the trees, or draping them over the patio, make sure you've got a clear plan in mind.

If you have solar festoon lights, make sure the solar panel is in a nice patch that gets some sun; if you have plug-in lights, you’ll want the plug nice and close to a power source.

Step 3: Hang Them High

Time to get your hands dirty! Use hooks or clips to secure the cable of the lights in place, making sure they're nice and taut. Don't be afraid to get creative—mix and match lengths, weave them in and out of fences or leaves, whatever looks best.

If you’re up on a ladder, make sure you have someone keeping an eye out for you - safety first!

Step 4: Power Up

Let there be light! Plug in your festoon lights and bask in the glow. Then sit back, relax and enjoy, preferably with a cold drink in hand.

How many festoon lights do I need?

So you've got your heart set on decking out your space with some festoon lights, but you're not quite sure how many you'll need to turn your backyard into an oasis. We’re here to help with our easy guide on how to measure up your space and get it all kitted out.

Step 1: Measure Up

Grab your tape measure and take a walk around your space, noting length and width of the area you want to illuminate.

Don't forget to include any nooks and crannies where you want to add a little extra sparkle, or consider whether you want your lights to zig-zag, run in straight lines or make a particular pattern.

Step 2: Set the Mood

Now it's time to decide just how bright and twinkly you want your space to be. Are you going for a subtle glow like a campfire under the stars, or do you want to really light up the night?

Think about the ambiance you're after to determine just how much light is right for the space. Our bulbs are placed 90cm apart for the perfect glow, but if you’d like more, you can always double up on lights along the same area.

Step 3: Do the Maths

Ready to put those maths skills to the test? Crunch the numbers to work out which length of light suits you best, remembering that with our lights, there’s a distance between the charger to the first connector (3m for our solar lights and 5m for our plug-in lights).

So if you have 25m of backyard space you want to cover, you might like to go with our 32m length option. That’s 27m of actual bulbs, giving you an extra 2m of lights to play with.

Step 4: Seal the Deal

Once you've worked out how many festoon lights you'll need, it's time to seal the deal and get shopping, all ready to light up the night.
